June 15, 2005
Present: David Cassie, Executive, Todd Stavrakos, Jenny Schultz, Glenn Kindel, Kate Killebrew, chair
Opened with prayer
The committee brainstormed some ideas and areas they would like to work in:
- Promotion of the Hunger action enabler position
- Administering the 2 cents a meal program
- Find ways to encourage congregations to connect with Community issues in their own area. For example tutoring programs, literacy, children at risk, homelessness, domestic violence
- Support the Pentecost offering
- Identify existing community organizations that are addressing social issues
- Promote the Peacemaking offering
- Itinerate an International Peacemaker in October
- Develop an awareness of other local and international issues that affect the church
The group decided to attend a meeting of the Tri County Organizing Group- lead by Joe Fleming at July 12, 2005 at 10:00 at the Presbytery office. This is a group that is seeking to gather ecumenical groups to address community needs and problems in the suburbs.
A Motion was presented by the Cuba Task force to the Council and was referred to the C&S committee to expend 4500.00 of the hunger funds contributed through the 2 cents a meal offering. The hunger funds have accumlulated nearly 9.000.00 for the 35 % portion for international hunger.
The Cuba task force requested that the money be used for the food growth and service of the dining hall in the Seminario Evangelico de Teologia in Matanzas Cuba. Pictures of the terraced gardens will be posted on the web site. Motion passed.
The group ended with prayer and dismissed to lunch.
Recorded by Kate Killebrew, chair
